In July 2016 my constituents Phil and Rachel Clarke lost their three-year-old daughter Poppy-Arabella when she was killed by a motorist while she and her mother were using a pedestrian crossing. The driver, John Place, was subsequently jailed for four years for dangerous driving. Despite having being advised not to drive by his optometrist because of his severely defective eyesight, he nonetheless chose to, and on this occasion went through a red light, hitting Poppy-Arabella and her mother. He did not swerve, brake or stop until flagged down by another driver.
